How to fix early extension in your golf swing


Most golfers struggle with a power leak that they cannot quite feel, but they can definitely see on camera. It is called early extension.


If you have ever felt like you are "standing up" through impact or losing your balance toward the ball, this is likely the culprit. Instead of your hips rotating open, they thrust forward. This crowds your arms, forces a flip of the hands, and usually ends in a block or a nasty hook.

The Butt-Line Check


To see if you are early extending, you need a "Down the Line" video. Once you have it in the app:


  1. Draw a vertical line that just touches your backside at address.

  2. Play the video in slow motion.

  3. Watch your hips during the downswing.


In a professional-level swing, the lead hip actually pushes back past that line during the turn. If you see a gap form between your body and the line before you hit the ball, you are early extending. Your hips are moving into the space where your hands need to be.


Why it happens


Early extension is often a reaction to something else. If your club is too steep, your brain knows you will dig a hole in the ground unless you stand up to shallow it out.


The Fix: Stay on the line


Next time you are on the range, focus on "keeping your tush on the wall." Use the SwingGrade line as your invisible wall. If you can keep your lead hip touching that line until well after impact, you will suddenly find all the room in the world for your arms to swing fast and free.


Stop fighting your swing path and start fixing your posture. Draw the line, stay on it, and watch your ball flight flatten out.
